There are some vehicles that every American knows-even those totally uninterested in the automotive world. Corvette, Mustang, and Jeep come to mind. Perhaps at the top of that list is the Chevrolet truck. The Silverado has been around for 20 years and is simply the latest generation in a long lineage of Chevy trucks. The Silverado is a piece of Americana and a fantastic vehicle to boot. If you’re looking for a used Chevy Silverado for sale, pay a visit to Frank Kent Chevrolet. Our unmatched selection of used Silverado trucks is sure to have the right vehicle for you.

Silverado Basics

The Chevy Silverado was introduced in August 1998 as a 1999 model. Since then, the truck has gone through three full redesigns, with the latest coming for the 2019 model year. These redesigns have slowly evolved the Silverado into the vehicle it is today. The trucks have been used as beacons of innovation-the first GM hybrid product was found in the 2004 Silverado and current 2019 models are capable of running on compressed or liquid natural gas. Together with its GMC Sierra twin, the Silverado has been an absolute best seller. Sales have never dropped below 300,000/year, and nearly 600,000 were sold in 2018. In total, over 12,000,000 Silverados have been sold worldwide. A symptom of this success is a very fruitful used market. Silverado’s are some of the longest lasting vehicles-this stat, combined with the number of units sold, has led to an abundance of used vehicles for sale.

Why Used?

There are a few good reasons to only purchase new pick-ups instead of used or CPO including warranties, low mileage, and no wear and tear are among those reasons. But as trucks have climbed in quality, their prices have risen too. While some models remain cheap, many grow exponentially more expensive as options and accessories are added. This seems to be especially true for trucks. Yes, it is still possible to find basic trucks, like a Silverado in WT trim, for under $30,000. However, the vast majority of trucks now skew towards luxury and higher prices. As many customers have switched from mid-level sedans to pick-ups, the market has responded. Truth be told, a buyer with a $60,000 budget is more likely to find the perfect match than a buyer with $30,000. For many, the cost of a new truck doesn’t fit into their budget.

Luckily, there are some hidden advantages to buying used. It’s an unfortunate but true adage that any new vehicle begins to lose its value as soon as it leaves the dealer lot. In fact, many vehicles experience their sharpest depreciation at the beginning of ownership. By buying used, you avoid this sudden drop in value to one of your most valuable assets. Any truck will continue to depreciate throughout its lifetime, but used owners have a chance to see a better return on investment if and when they decided to sell their vehicle. The depreciation curve may also slide pricier trucks into your price bracket. This can be especially helpful for those looking for the most up-to-date safety equipment or futuristic technology. A used truck doesn’t mean you have to downgrade.

Debunking Used Myths

There are plenty of old wives’ tales that you’ve probably heard or seen as you look for a used truck. Let’s take a second to debunk some of these anecdotes.

With no warranty, you’ll spend loads of time and money at the auto shop.

If a warranty is important to you, you can add an aftermarket warranty to your vehicle at any time. While it won’t be rolled into the cost of your vehicle or come “free” like with a new truck, it can offset the financial burden if expensive repairs are needed. Also, used pick-ups can be incredibly dependable with proper maintenance. Yes, it may be annoying to deal with getting your vehicle serviced, but consistent upkeep can prevent disasters down the road. Although wear and tear are unavoidable, a well-maintained vehicle will give you years of great driving.

If you have bad credit or no credit, good luck getting anything better than a clunker

Nothing could be further from the truth. The key for drivers in this situation is preparation. Getting pre-qualified or pre-approved will help you set a budget and give you an idea of the loan terms with which you’ll be complying. No credit and bad credit buyers also need to make sure they stick to a budget; a sensible truck with low payments will pay off in the long term.

High-mileage vehicles are bad news

Again, this comes down to maintenance and looking at the Carfax report. If a high-mileage vehicle has multiple accidents and a history of expensive trips to the auto shop, it’s best to stay away. Well-maintained vehicles, however, should be treated roughly the same as any other used vehicle. Many modern trucks are capable of making it to 200,000 and even 300,000 miles or more. With a little TLC, your used vehicle can do the same. Another symptom of so many Silverados out on the road is the prevalence of parts available. If your Silverado ends up needing some work done, parts are likely to be cheap and easy to find.

You can’t get all the features you want in a used vehicle

Anyone who is cynical enough to believe this needs a reality check. Used trucks, especially those less than three-years-old, have many of the same features as their new counterparts. If there are certain features that you want to make sure you have, it’s best to check when the vehicle’s last refresh or redesign took place. For example, before the 2019 redesign, the previous generation of the Silverado lasted from 2014 to 2018. While there were incremental upgrades and changes made to the Silverado over those four years, the majority of the vehicles remained the same. It stands to reason, then, that a 2014 model would be basically the same as a 2018. If you can stand the increased mileage, a 2014 model could be a real bargain.
